This was the bands 1st official single released on February 20th 1981 but due to an very poor chart performance only reaching #57 on the UK singles chart meant it did not appear on theoriginal album release, only getting onto the 1988 rerelease &amp 2006 dvd release. Its bizarre due to the fact it sounds a lot like “New Life” as properly some early Kraftwerk (circa “Europe Endless” or “Showroom Dummies”), even the single voice singing “Dreaming Of me” at the end reminds me of the solo vocal work of Ralph &amp Florien in Kraftwerk.

1. “Ice Machine” – four.06

The intro gets me thinking about “Waiting For The Night” to be quite honest but then it modifications to a completely diverse style almost reflecting stuff like “Telegraph” by OMD. Its really krautrock in its feeling too so a lot more Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream influences there I fancy. The arpeggio is quite understated and had me singing Kraftwerks “Laptop or computer World” in my head.

two. “Shout!” – 3.46

Was the b-side of the “New Life” single and it predates the Tears For Fears song of the exact same name by 3 years so who says early Depeche Mode weren’t influencing their younger counterparts, it surely feels like it influenced “Tesla Girls” by OMD and thevocal style of Gahan actually influenced Martin Ware when he formed Heaven 17.

3. “Any Second Now” – 3.08

This version is an instrumental and reminds me even much more of Vangelis or Tangerine Dream with the lyrics stripped out, you get the feeling this would have actually accomplished well as a track in a movie as it genuinely evokes the period of films like War Games, Electric Dreams &amp Weird Science any of which would have played house to this instrumental version actually nicely. Beautiful broad sweeping open chords with a tiny sequenced arpeggio running over the back for a quite cool mixture. Just as excellent as the vocal version.

four. “Just Cannot Get Enough (Schizo Mix)” – 6.46

Depeche Mode really like their mixes and remixes. There are almost undoubtedly far more remixes of Mode tracks than actual original songs I’d guess. Its weird, its various but its still close enough to the original song to be straightforward to dance to.

Depeche Mode 80-81 (Do We Really Have To Give Up Our Day Jobs?) – 28.00

Which is a 28 minute lengthy documentary that chronicles the generating of the album and has interviews with the group (such as Vince Clarke just before he left to form Yazoo) and other folks such as Daniel Miller who produced the album. Included are the groups performances on Top of the Pops as properly as their 1st look in 1981 singing “New Life”. There is also BBC archive material of the Speak &amp Spell Tour in 1981.
